I hope your week has been enjoyable.
Director of Catholic Education, Mr Ross Fox visited the college on Wednesday. It was lovely for Mr Fox to connect with students and staff. Three of the ‘first responders’ involved in last term’s critical incident were unable to attend the recent CECG Recognition Awards in Canberra as they were with students on the senior snow trip. Mr Tim Hodges, Mr Charlton Fogarty and Mr Joel Coates had an opportunity to briefly meet with the Director and they are photographed with the team below. Again, I congratulate them on their award.

Commissioning Ceremony for new Student Leadership Team (SLT)
We gathered as a college community earlier this week to commission our new senior Year 12 leaders. It is a privilege to work alongside these young people as they grow in confidence and develop leadership skills that will equip them for life beyond school. Our new leaders have demonstrated qualities of dedication, integrity, and a passion for making a positive difference. They have already shown their potential to inspire, guide, and support their peers. As they take on their roles, they inherit a legacy of leadership that has been carefully nurtured and built upon by those who came before them. I thank our outgoing SLT and know they have been outstanding ambassadors for the college. Pictured below are our outgoing Year 12 leaders who have handed over their positions to the newly elected Student Leadership Team.

College Captains 2023
Outgoing Captains Will and Tanesha expressed their congratulations to our new leaders in a heartfelt email which I share with you below.
Hi Everyone!
On behalf of the SLT of 2023, Tanesha and I would like to congratulate you on your new positions! We just wanted to say how proud we are of your selections into the SLT for 2023/24. Congratulations on this remarkable achievement! Your dedication, leadership skills, and commitment to making a positive difference in our college is a testament to your selections.
As you embark on this exciting journey, we want you to know that you have our full support. The responsibilities and opportunities of being a part of the SLT are immense, and we are confident that you will rise to the occasion and excel in your roles.
Your roles as leaders extend beyond just the title. You now have the chance to shape the experiences of your fellow students, inspire change, and foster a sense of unity within our community. We believe in your potential to create meaningful initiatives, organise engaging events, and uphold the values that make our college special.
These next couple of weeks are a great opportunity for you to come and talk to any of us, whether that be to your specific captain/s on expectations of your new role or just a general idea of what to expect. Please feel free to reach out to us!
Once again, congratulations on becoming members of the Student Leadership Team for 2023/24. Your journey is just beginning, and we can't wait to see the positive impact you will undoubtedly make.

Commemoration
On Saturday 2 September 2023 the Moruya RSL Sub-Branch acknowledged veterans of the Afghanistan War and commemorated the 15th Anniversary of the battle of Khas Uruzgan. John Vardy is a former student of Carroll College and a veteran of the Afghanistan War. These young Australians perform a wonderful service for their country, then simply blend anonymously back into civilian life with little fuss or fanfare. It is fitting for them to be recognised for their service and I congratulate John on this important occasion. Matilda Taynor (Year 11) attended the ceremony in recognition of John's service to our country and was a wonderful ambassador for our college.
Thank you to Carroll College parent, Gary Traynor for raising our awareness of this anniversary.

Mr Greg McAteer, MacKillop House Coordinator is taking leave from next Monday for two weeks. I thank Mr McAteer for his work this term and hope he has a most enjoyable break with his family. He returns to work at the start of Term 4.
We welcome Mrs Kym Millikin to the role of MacKillop House Coordinator (Acting) in Mr McAteer's absence. Mrs Millikin will then replace Mrs Karen Lyttle for the first two weeks of Term 4 when she takes leave, switching to Xavier House Coordinator (Acting). I wish Mrs Millikin every success in these Pastoral roles.
With respect and encouragement to you.

Year 4 Eucharist Retreat
On Wednesday 30 August, 25 Year 9 students voluntarily took part in facilitating the Year 4 Eucharist Retreat Day. The students spent part of the previous day preparing for the event and ensuring they were ready to lead the students through various activities to help them prepare for their First Holy Communion. The day's purpose was to explore the themes of community, inclusion, the qualities of Jesus and the importance of prayer.
Students led their younger peers in games and activities and spent time debriefing and explaining the message and symbolism behind them. The day was an excellent opportunity for our students to demonstrate their initiative, develop their leadership skills and work together to present a cohesive and meaningful day for others.
Thank you to Mrs Belle Barling, Faith Formation Coordinator for helping the students on the day and preparing the program. Thank you to Ms Jane Garland for preparing lunch for all the students on the day.
Congratulations to the following students who stepped forward to be part of the day and for their courage to try something new. They all demonstrated excellent leadership and were a credit to themselves, our school, and their families.

SHINE Youth Ministry Conference
On Friday 1 September, Carroll College took part in another Youth Ministry event. The SHINE Youth Ministry Conference was held at Merici College, Canberra with some 400 students in attendance. 15 students from Year 9 and Year 10 put themselves forward to attend the Conference, taking part in workshops related to personal sharing, drama, music, leading small groups, prayer, and care for the environment.
For those of our community who are not familiar with the SHINE Conference, here is a brief explanation from the Conference organisers:
SHINE is a student gathering for Year 9 and 10 students completing the CSYMI Youth Ministry units of study. The day is designed to encourage students in their faith journey and further deepen their personal relationship with Jesus.
The conference is comprised of a variety of keynote speakers, presenters, talks, dramas, testimony, music and other practical workshops and experiences.
SHINE is also a great opportunity for young people across the Archdiocese to come together, be encouraged and learn from each other as well as build relationships outside of their school community.
Year 10 students, Erin Drewsen and Savannah McGann have written a reflection of the day.
On Friday Week 7, selected Year 9 and 10 students attended the Shine Youth Ministry Conference at Merici College, Canberra. We attended workshops and viewed presentations that were highly engaging, and it allowed us to socialise with members of schools across the Canberra Goulburn region, and deepen our knowledge of what it means to ‘shine’.
The conference was a really awakening experience as we pondered the impact our faith has on our lives. We were given a series of workshops to take part in which we discussed a range of issues from homelessness to our individual importance in the world as a young person. We met a variety of guest speakers and entertainers including ‘Sir Augie’ who talked with us about how being Christian has influenced his life as a musical artist and led him to be where he is today. The day was fast-paced, enjoyable, and entertaining and invited us to think about the role God has in our lives.
For lunch we had Subway and cans of soft drinks delivered to the College and we sat around the school's courtyard talking with students from Canberra schools as we ate and drank. It was interesting and fun to engage with students from other schools and some of us even exchanged numbers to create a group chat with the people we met from the day.
Overall, it was a very fun and highly engaging experience, and we would definitely recommend for students in upcoming years to participate in this event.
Thank you very much to Ms Elle Boller who accompanied the students to Canberra and shared this experience with them in a caring and supportive manner. Congratulations to the following students on attending this event.

A Message from our Assistant Principal, Pastoral Care
Opportunities for student leadership abound at Carroll College. This week we thanked our 2023 Student Leadership Team for their contribution and commissioned the new team for 2024. During the ceremony, our new College Captains, Liam and Macy gave their first address to the students, staff, parents and friends that were present. The text of their speech is below and I am sure you will agree that they represent a bright future for leadership at the college.
Good morning and welcome Mrs Heffernan, staff, students, parents, carers, and guests.
Each time we gather to commission the new Student Leadership Team, we bear witness to the remarkable potential within our school community. We celebrate the unique talents, aspirations, and commitments that each and every member brings. We stand together, in the hope of creating a school environment that not only benefits us today but also paves the way for a brighter future for every student to come.
The students sitting before you are the 16 members of your incoming 2024 Student Leadership Team. Over the past 5 years, we have had the opportunity to attend assemblies, sports carnivals and extracurricular events that have exposed us to the responsibilities and challenges that come with being a part of the SLT. We have been inspired and encouraged by the Year 12 cohort to step into these roles with confidence and initiative.
To Will, Tanesha, members of the outgoing SLT and Year 12 - The graduating class of 2023; High school has taken you on a wild ride and yet you have continued to uphold a great level of support, kindness and encouragement to all within our college community. On behalf of Year 11, I would like to thank you for the leadership and friendship you have shown us as school representatives since we embarked on our high school journey. You have taught me many things. I particularly recall advice from our captains on the Year 11 information night encouraging us to find a balance in the busyness for the year to come. I’d like to highlight the significant focus you have had around cultural engagement. This was evident in the NAIDOC week celebration. You have set such a good example when welcoming special guests to the College and taking part in community events such as ANZAC Day and the Bridge Walk. So, it's important that you don’t forget to take a step back and reflect on what you have accomplished in your time here and get excited for what the future holds.
If there’s been one thing I’ve learned from being a student at this school, and now a leader, is that without teamwork, leadership is, plain and simply, unachievable. While individuals may hold leadership positions, the true essence of leadership lies in collaboration and the ability to inspire and guide others toward a common goal. A true leader recognises the unique talents and strengths of their teammates, creating an environment of confidence. In doing so they create an effective team that overcomes challenges, inspires others, and achieves remarkable results. That is what we as school captains will achieve, we won’t just be leaders, but collaborators and teammates, working hand in hand with our peers, the staff, and the students of this college.
I’d like to take the opportunity to say a special thanks to the people involved in this year’s election process. Mrs Heffernan, Mrs Ibbett, the pastoral team, Year 11 and staff - thank you for granting us with this amazing privilege and honour. A key theme that was evident throughout the election process was that our year group has a strong belief that every idea is valued, and we encourage you to share YOUR visions and goals for our school. Whether they are big or small.
We might have the title of ‘School Captain’ but I look into the crowd today and I see, Leaders. Leaders that are not defined by badges but by their dedication, their kindness, and their unwavering compassion for their peers and this school. We all have the power to lead, to influence positive change and to contribute to the betterment of our school. So, as we embark on this long promising journey through the next year, let us work together to ensure that every voice is heard, where inclusivity reigns, and where our actions speak louder than our words. Because it is on this day, in this ceremony, at this defining moment that we will continue the legacy of our past leaders.
Thank you.

Eurobodalla Youth Committee
For many years Carroll College has had student representatives on the Youth Committee advocating and assisting to plan and run activities for the youth of the Eurobodalla. As part of this newsletter, there are flyers advertising the activities planned for the next school holidays. Parents and students are encouraged to have a look and get engaged with the fun activities on offer. The committee is always looking for new members. Joining the committee is a great way to learn new skills, build leadership capabilities, and have fun. If you think your child would enjoy this opportunity then please encourage them to see Mrs Ibbett for details.
Raphaella Herford of Year 12 has been an active member of the Youth Council for several years. We would like to thank her for her service. I know that the team from the Council will miss her great ideas and active participation in a wide range of events.
This week our Year 7 students started with a meeting to reflect on how each student can make the best contribution to their learning environment through their organisation and participation in class. Years 8 and 9 had the opportunity to enjoy some team building, and fun activities that allowed them to mix as a cohort beyond their usual academic and Homeroom groupings. Year 10 gathered in the HUB for a guest speaker organised by our Careers advisor, Mrs Dalgleish. Amy Kovacs is the Employment Project Officer at Eurobodalla Shire Council. Her presentation included the benefits of working at ESC, application writing tips/tricks, work experience at ESC, and potential employment or traineeships that are coming up. It was great for the students to have insight into pathway opportunities for one of the largest employers in our area.
Year 11 students have commenced their Preliminary examinations. Year 12 were able to meet the NESA HSC Presiding Officer to become more familiar with the procedures in place for their final examination period. They also had the opportunity to hear about the ways they can improve the management of their personal data by adjusting the settings on their personal devices.
The Pastoral Care Team is always ready to assist our students and families. If you have any questions or concerns regarding your child, please reach out to your child's Pastoral Coordinator. We are only too happy to speak with you or direct your concern to the most appropriate person.
Please be aware that Mr Greg McAteer, Pastoral Coordinator of MacKillop House is taking some leave for the last two weeks of Term 3. Mrs Kym Millikin will be Acting in his place and is keen to support the students in her care.

A Message from our Assistant Principal Curriculum, Learning and Innovation
Dear Carroll Community, this fortnight I would like to focus on the preliminary exams, and particularly last minute examination preparation for our students.
What do you do if you have left your study until the last minute? In an ideal world, it would be great if all students paid attention, focused and participated in all classes, completed all homework and assessments thoroughly, asked for help throughout the year on anything they didn’t understand, made regular summaries of the work covered in class (preferably at the end of each topic or section) and did their best to learn as they go throughout the year. But in reality, this doesn’t always happen for every student and every subject. So what can you do if you have left your study for tests and exams to the last minute?
1. CLARIFY YOUR FOCUS: Before you dive into your study materials, take a moment to identify what topics and concepts will be tested. Reach out to your teachers or classmates if you're unsure about any specifics. Understanding the exam format and question style will guide your study strategy. Create a checklist of subjects and topics you need to cover, ensuring you're not leaving anything out.
2. GATHER MATERIALS: Do you have notes, materials, and textbooks on everything you need to learn? If not, is there a friend who can forward you the resources you have misplaced? Is there an online portal where material from classes is stored? Can you borrow from the library additional books or textbooks on the topics you need to learn? Are past examination papers available?
3. DRAFT A STUDY PLAN: You only have limited time left so you need to make the most of it. Draw up a grid that shows how much time you have left before your exams to study. Decide if you will spend equal time on each subject or if certain subjects need more time. Allocate subjects to the timeslots you have then decide exactly what you will do to prepare for each subject. For each subject list what sort of study you should do to prepare for that subject. Brainstorm your ideas on how to prepare, ask your parents and teachers for feedback, and share ideas with your friends.
4. CREATE STUDY NOTES: Target your notes to what will be tested. It is best for learning and memory to make your study notes yourself, but if you have run out of time there are options. See if any of your class materials or textbooks have summarised the sections you need, see if there are study guides available in the library on the topics to learn, or make targeted notes yourself on the key areas you have to memorise. You could also see if there is a friend where you could split the topics between yourself and share the notes you make. Don’t spend too long on this stage, it needs to be completed as quickly as possible.
5. STUDY! What does study actually mean? It means memorising the material you need to know so you can recall it in the exams, and practising the skills of the subject so you know how to do the types of questions you will have in the exam. To memorise your notes you need to test yourself over and over on them. You could read a section, see what you can write down without looking then check. Then review the things you didn’t know again. Or you could do the same approach reading things out loud and then seeing what you can repeat out loud. Doing questions, practise essays, past exam questions will also help you understand what you know, and what you need to spend more time on.
Remember, the key is to get started. Procrastination won't serve you well at this point. Embrace the challenge, and you'll be surprised at how much you can accomplish when you're focused and determined. Your ability to absorb and apply information quickly is stronger than you think. Finally, I’m a firm believer that:
EFFORT = SUCCESS!
Wishing all our Year 11 students every success during the preliminary exams, and Year 12 students next term for the HSC examinations.

Field Trip to Tilba Dairy
The HSC Business Studies course offers students great insight into the complexities of setting up and running a business. Last week, the students consolidated their learning by visiting the Tilba Dairy. The students heard first-hand the many challenges that businesses face and the strategies applied in response. They were also able to see the inputs and processes involved in the production of milk and cheese. Thanks to Erica Dibden and Cecilia Matthews for providing our students with this invaluable experience.
On Monday 28 August Years 10, 11, and 12 students participated in workshops with Academics from Sydney Universities; Kumva and Kwibuka Project.
Kumva and Kwibuka (Listen and Remember) is a group of Rwandan Genocide Survivors and educators who have come together to run workshops in schools, with students and teachers as well as with community organisations.
Carroll College Year 10 History students were fortunate to have been able to participate in a two-hour workshop facilitated by Dri Ari Lander, who has spent many years as an educational program director at the Sydney Jewish Museum, interviewing Holocaust Survivors and ensuring their amazing stories of survival and resilience are maintained for future generations. Dr Lander has also worked with Survivors of the Kinchela Boys Home and has documented their experiences. Year 10 students are currently learning about the Changing Rights and Freedoms of African American People as well as Australia's Indigenous peoples. We will then begin a depth study of the Holocaust next term, therefore this workshop was extremely beneficial in creating context for their studies.
Year 11 and 12 Legal Studies students complete case studies on the Rwandan Genocide and the Human Rights abuses that occurred during this bloody conflict. They also learn about the United Nations and International Court of Criminal Justice so were very excited to participate in a workshop with Dr Lander as well Amadee Jean Paul Nizigama, a journalist, videographer, interpreter and co-founder of Kumva and Kwibuka, along with his wife, a Rwandan genocide survivor. Born in Burundi (next to Rwanda) he had grown up believing he was a Burundian Hutu, but later discovered that his Grandfather was a Tutsi refugee from Rwanda, escaping persecution. Amadee's early life was marked by forced relocation, ethnic violence and life as a refugee, where he met his wife Agnes, both survivors fleeing violence.
The students benefitted so much from hearing these personal stories interwoven with the political events that were occurring, putting their classroom learning into context and developing their understanding of the effects on the lives of those who lived through these events.

Ever wondered what SBAT’s are all about?
Firstly, what does SBAT stand for and what does it mean?
School-Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships.
Students who sign up for an SBAT at Carroll College work with an employer, trainers and school to study an area of interest to them.
An SBAT is an agreement between the student, family, employer, trainer and school. This is a formal government agreement and is legally binding.
Students are paid as a part-time trainee or apprentice for the duration of Year 11 and 12.
Depending on the industry of study, students will need to do either 100 days or 180 days in the workplace. These are generally completed during the week as a part of their schooling.
We have a two success stories to share with you this week.
Tara Morris is in Year 12 and has recently completed a School Based Traineeship in Individual Support - Aged Care (Certificate III) at Banksia Village. Tara is a superstar! She received an award for the SBAT of the Year at the South Coast Workplace Learning Awards - recognising her amazing contribution to Banksia Village during her SBAT.
In addition to this fantastic achievement, Tara has received Early Entry to the University of NSW, Bachelor of Medical Science – Tara’s ATAR requirement for this course has been reduced significantly by the university because of her achievement in her Certificate III course. This is amazing and we would like to congratulate Tara on her offer.
Nathan Megee is in Year 11. In addition to the School-Based Traineeship in Supply Chain Operations at Reece Plumbing (Certificate II) Nathan is also studying a Certificate II in Construction Pathways and a Certificate III in Sport Coaching at Carroll College. As a component of Nathan’s pattern of study, he has included a 2 unit course – Industry Based Learning which is a self-paced journal and industry log (student work in the Hub) that directly connects with his Traineeship. This course is only available to students who have an SBAT in their pattern of study and students work with the VET Coordinator to ensure they are meeting the course outline.
Who can sign up for an SBAT and when do sign-ups happen?
Students in Year 10 in 2023 are eligible to sign up for an SBAT. Students and families will be responsible for finding employees (there are some SBAT’s that are advertised by the VET Office- watch out for Sentral Messages from Elise Paull or myself).
Ideally, sign-ups would happen at the end of Year 10 – this means that some of the work days can be completed during the holidays.
Sign-ups must be completed by the end of Term 1, Year 11.
If you are in Year 10 and are interested in an SBAT, please come to the VET Office to ask questions or to collect an expression of interest.
We look forward to seeing you soon.

It's been another huge term for sport at CCB! Below I have written some of the highlights throughout the term so far.
Soccer
Big congratulations to all our students who represented the college in our Bill Turner Cup soccer teams this year and our senior boys teams. We have an outstanding group of young players coming through in both our boys and girls divisions and it was our most successful year to date.
The girls team made it to Round 4.
The boys team made it to Round 3 in the Bill Turner Competition.
A big thanks to all the staff involved in helping with soccer this year - Mrs Cooper, Mr Kenneally, Mrs Rudol and Mr Szkwarek.
Netball
Earlier in the term the college competed in the Netball NSW regional finals at Broulee.
The Year 9/10 boys were undefeated in every round, however, went down to St Johns Nowra in the Grand final.
The Year 7/8 girls also did really well, only losing one round of the day. Unfortunately, they lost the finals but played beautifully, supporting each other and showing respect towards the umpires and their opponents.
Our Year 9 and 10 umpires that travelled with us did a fantastic job, even though some were challenged by players. A huge thanks and congratulations to Mia Lasscock, Annabelle Paul, Emily Borg and Maya Barnes.
Thanks to all the staff that attended on the day and Mrs Dwyer for organising the event.
Archdiocese Netball Championships
On Monday 28 August, we had 8 teams travel to Canberra to compete in the Archdiocesan Netball Championships. Our 7/8 girls team placed 2nd, 7/8 boys placed 2nd, 9/10 girls placed 1st and our open boys placed 1st. Congratulations!
Thanks to Mrs Smart, Mr Thane, Mr Harding, Ms Ferguson, Mrs Paull and Mrs Lyttle/Mrs Dwyer for organising the event.

Earlier in the term, Sophie & Bill Eppelstun had a wonderful week in Newcastle as part of the NSWCCC golf team playing in the NSW All Schools Golf Championships. After 4 x 18 hole rounds at Belmont Golf Club and Waratah Golf Club, Sophie finished 5th overall with very consistent rounds - 1 over par, 1 over par, even par and 2 over par, making the NSW All Schools Golf Team. Sophie also won runner-up in the NSWCCC girl’s scratch event; missing out on the top honour by 1 shot.
Sophie Eppelstun then competed in the School Sport Australia Golf Championships on the 6 - 11August.
The School Sport Australia Golf Championships were held at 3 different courses on the Gold Coast - 2 rounds per day x 4 days at Palmer Gold Coast, Robina Woods & Emerald Lakes; a mix of stroke play and match play against the other state teams.
Sophie finished 10th in the girls 36 hole stroke play with rounds of 6 over and even par. The NSW team won the match play.
Congratulations Sophie!

School Surfing
Congratulations to Lincoln Dell, Harry Barrington, Lizzy Barrington and Ruby Davis who competed in the South Coast State School Surfing Title earlier in the term held at Corrimal Beach, Wollongong.
The girls surfed well in the tricky conditions and came 4th overall.
The boys surfed well and made it into the quarter-finals before being knocked out.
Thanks to Mrs Dell for taking the team away.

Touch football
On 2August we had 4 teams travel to Penrith for the NSW Touch Football State Cup. These teams qualified for the finals in Penrith at our local gala day Batemans Bay. The standard of touch football at the tournament was exceptional and although our teams did not win many games, they have significantly improved their touch games. We are looking forward to seeing them in action again in Cootamundra in Term 4.
A big thank you to Mr Brady, Miss Large, Miss Ferguson and Mrs Davis for their time and organistation.

Rugby Union
9/10 Boys
Earlier in the term, the Carroll College 9/10 Boys Rugby Union team travelled to Canberra to take part in the finals of the Brumbies Rugby 7s tournament.
Our team played some fantastic rugby and represented our school with sportsmanship and pride.
The team finished third in our entire region, which is a fabulous achievement. Thanks to Mr Brady and Mrs Katuke for coaching and organising.
Rugby 9/10 Girls
Earlier in the term, the U16 Girls Rugby Union Team travelled to Canberra for the ACT and Southern NSW Brumbies High School 7s Finals.
Well done to our girls, for their fantastic sportsmanship and phenomenal effort considering all of our players were playing up one age group
Thanks to Mr Brady for your time and organistation.
AFL
Earlier in the term our 7-9 boys and girls AFL teams competed in the South Coast schools AFL Cup.
After a late withdrawal from Moruya High, both teams had to play one game against Narooma High. Unfortunately, the girls lost to a strong Narooma side but played well on the day. Our boy's side was victorious and progressed to the South Coast finals where they faced some tough competition. The boys competed well all day against schools from Wollongong, Nowra, and Pambula. Unfortunately, the boys lost all three games in tight contests. However, they showed great effort, attitude and sportsmanship.
A big thanks to Mr Thane and Mr Graziani for coaching and organising the AFL this year!
