What is a Pilgrimage?
Unlike a tour, a pilgrimage is meant to be a personal spiritual experience.
In ancient times pilgrims travelled by sailing ships, horses and even on foot. They often faced the possibility of never returning. There were no hospitals or modern medical aids to assist them. They travelled on ‘faith’.

Tell Them From Me Survey
As part of our focus on school effectiveness, Carroll College will be participating in an online survey for students and parents – Tell Them From Me® (TTFM®). The survey will provide us with valuable feedback on what our students think about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways that teachers interact with them. Schools in Australia and around the world have used the Tell Them From Me survey to help them improve.
During the next few weeks, all students will be given the opportunity to participate in this survey. Students who agree to complete the survey will be given a random username and password to access and complete the survey online. Students’ names cannot be linked to their responses which allows responses to be completely anonymous. Results will show all student scores combined together – it is not possible to single out individual students in the results. The survey takes approximately 15-20 minutes to complete.
The survey measures include such topics as emotional and social well-being, physical health, and behaviours and attitudes linked to student success. The survey also allows students to give their thoughts and feedback in open-ended question responses.
Participation in the survey is entirely voluntary. Your child will not take part if either you or your child do not wish to. If, during the survey, your child is uncomfortable answering any question, he/she should leave it blank and move on to the next one. Your child can stop the survey at any time. More details will follow next week.
Mathematical Association of NSW (MANSW)
I am thrilled to inform you that Mrs Sandra Harris is one of the Workshop Presenters at the MANSW Regional Conference tomorrow in Batemans Bay. Ms Jeni McCarthy from St Bernard’s and Mrs Harris from Carroll College will MC proceedings with Mrs Harris featuring High Impact Teaching Practices in the Secondary context as one of the workshop presentations. Ms McCarthy and Mrs Harris work closely together as part of our K-12 Catholic Schools’ Pathways on the South Coast.
As the weather is cooling down now, please ensure your child is wearing their correct winter uniform. The staff and I will be looking closely again at uniform items over the coming weeks. There has been a marked improvement overall. I will email families over the weekend to highlight a few areas we are focusing on currently. Thank you for your cooperation. We all want what is in the best interest of your children.
Enjoy a lovely weekend.

St Mother Teresa
As part of my role as Religious Education Coordinator at Carroll College, it is my great privilege and pleasure to speak at Open and Information Nights and various other occasions about what it means to be part of a Catholic community. I talk about the responsibility that Catholic Schools have to educate the ‘whole person’. I recently saw this mission described as educating “the head, heart and the hand.”
One way we educate the head is to teach the students about seven Catholic Social Teaching principles. These principles guide thinking and help us ensure that the world is a safe and just place for all, not just a few. The Catholic Social Teaching principles studies are:
- Human dignity
- The Common Good
- Solidarity
- Subsidiarity
- Participation
- Care for our Common Home
- Preferential Option for the Poor.
These principles are explored in Religious Education classes and are used as a framework through which human actions and global events can be analysed and examined.
By learning about Catholic Social Teaching, our goal is for students to think broadly and critically about the world around them but to do so with a compassionate heart. We want to teach students to care for themselves, for others and for the planet so that everyone can thrive.
To educate the hand, we engage in social justice campaigns and initiatives. It is timely, then, to announce that once again Carroll College will be supporting the St Vincent de Paul Winter Appeal. The Appeal launches formally on Thursday 1 June. Vinnies has requested the following items be donated to support those in our community who need a little extra help:
- blankets
- scarves
- warm hats/beanies
- gloves
- gift cards
- non -perishable food e.g. tinned food, pasta, rice etc.
To participate in social justice is to live out the principles of Human Dignity, the Common Good and Preferential Option for the Poor. If students see themselves enacting the Catholic Social Teachings they have learned about in class, then their learning about why we help others is that much clearer. Our hope too, is that they become people who seek to bring about necessary change in the world and to be advocates for those who cannot speak for themselves.
I ask that you please support the upcoming Vinnies Winter Appeal. There will be more information about this in the next newsletter.

Meet Janette Soper
Science Teacher
Looking back, my teaching journey started at a very early age when I would help my friends learn dance routines in preparation for their exams. These beginnings progressed to dance and swimming teaching qualifications in my late teens. My two elder brothers were teachers and I vividly remember stating I did not want to become a teacher as I neared the completion of my Bachelor of Science at the University of Western Australia. It was one of my wise lecturers that convinced me to complete my Diploma of Education and during my first school placement, I knew teaching was my future.
I have been teaching now for almost 30 years. Originally from Perth, I started my career at St Mary’s Anglican Girls’ School before marrying and moving to Canberra where I worked at Radford College and then Canberra Grammar School as Assistant Head of Science. I am an experienced teacher of Junior Science, HSC Biology, and the International Baccalaureate Diploma – Biology. I love what I do and appreciate the opportunities to nurture young minds that teaching provides and the daily rewards that it brings.
My family has been a frequent visitor to Tomakin over the past 25 years and my husband and I are excited by the prospect of becoming permanent residents in the area and on the coast again. I have greatly appreciated the warm welcome I have received since joining the Carroll team and look forward to continuing my teaching journey in this supportive and caring community.

A Message from our Assistant Principal, Pastoral Care
Our students are wonderful ambassadors for the college through their volunteering, support and participation in a wide range of groups and events across the region. Two community groups have reached out to us with an invitation for students to apply to be the youth voice for their organisation.
Firstly, Headspace Batemans Bay has an active Youth Reference Group made up of young people from 16-25 years who are passionate about mental health and wellbeing. The group are involved in the planning, decision making and direction of Headspace Batemans Bay. Members sign on for 12 months and attend monthly meetings (one hour duration), can volunteer to attend events and participate in online groups between meetings. If you feel that your child would enjoy being part of this Youth Reference Group and gain invaluable experience then please follow the link. If your child is under 16 years of age then they will need the approval of their parents/guardians. info@headspacebatemansby.org.au
The 2024 NSW Youth Advisory Council (YAC) is open to children and young people between 12-24 years of age residing in NSW. Applications are sought from children and young people from diverse backgrounds, life experiences and from different locations around the state. The 12 member YAC meets regularly and provides a direct avenue of communication between young people and the NSW Government. Members provide feedback to decision-makers, community organisations and the NSW Advocate for Children and Young People on issues concerning children and young people. If you feel that your child would enjoy being part of this Youth Advisory Council and gain invaluable experience, then please follow the link.

National Road Safety Week 2023
This week is National Road Safety Week 2023 and occurs between 14 -21 May. Across our region, we drive not only on suburban roads but also country roads with twists and turns bordered by trees and the chance of animals crossing unexpectedly. To remind us of the measures we can take as drivers to ensure safety on the road, a resource has been prepared. All drivers and families are encouraged to open the link below to explore these resources.
Bus safety
At our college assembly, I spoke about the need for all students travelling on buses to and from school to abide by the bus rules and requests from the drivers. Students were reminded to wear their seat belts, be responsible for their own rubbish and ensure that their behaviour is always polite and respectful. Our local bus services also wanted to remind students that buses have CCTV which can be used to help identify students who misbehave.
National Families Week
National Families Week Australia runs between 15 -21 May and coincides with the United Nations International Day of Families. The aim of the Week is to celebrate the vital role that families play in Australian society and is an initiative of Families Australia and supported by the Australian Government Department of Social Services.
With this in mind, we are all encouraged to pause and reflect on our own families and the important role they play in our lives. We might take some time to connect with family via a phone call, shared meal with conversation or a ‘good old fashioned’ games night.
E safety commissioner news
The eSafety Commissioner website is a wonderful resource for families to use as we navigate the challenges of teenage years and the correct use of technology. The link below will allow you to view the upcoming webinar topics which may be of interest. From this link, you are able to register for the webinar events.

Uniform
All students should now be wearing the Winter uniform. To ensure that students are wearing their uniforms correctly they have been asked to read over the uniform expectations. Students are already aware that we will be conducting uniform checks in the coming weeks starting with a focus on the length of uniforms. Areas of concern continue to be excessive jewellery, makeup including false eyelashes etc, short skirts and shorts, wrong socks and facial hair. All parents are asked to continue to support the college staff to ensure that our students are well presented each day.
Our Pastoral Care structures are in place to support all the students at the college. If your child raises any concerns with you, please feel free to reach out to the college so we can respond. In the following Wellbeing article, our ongoing focus on building the awareness and capacity of our students around mental health issues is celebrated.

Mental Health Week
This week our College had the opportunity to recognise Mental Health Week. These events were driven by our Student Leadership Team and it was really impressive seeing the leaders invest lots of energy into making it an important week for the students to be aware of. Homeroom was extended for five minutes each day for students and staff to participate in a number of activities.
The following is a snapshot of what we participated in during the week:
- Monday: We had a whole school assembly in the hall. The SLT shared their thoughts about the importance of mental health and Lani Rogerson presented a speech about her own experience. Well done to the team for creating an informative video on the theme.
- Tuesday: The focus was on Affirmations. Students created an affirmation for someone in their life that they appreciate.
- Wednesday: The focus was on the power of self-love and kindness. Students viewed a short clip on Nedd Brockmann’s experience and reflected on ways to be more kind to themselves.
- Thursday: The focus was on Remembering Dolly's Day/Dream. Students viewed a short film about the day and read about the effects of bullying and what bullying is.
- Friday: The focus was on finding mental strength. Students as a 'Homeroom' participated in a push up/squat or sit up challenge to the song ‘Bring Sally Up’.
During Academic Care on Tuesday, the entire school was lucky to have Headspace present. Years 7 – 10 gathered in the Hall and Years 11 and 12 in the Hub. The presentation consisted of discussions around what a worry is and how to identify stress or anxiety. The presenters provided students with a ‘toolbox’ on how to work through the triggers of worries or anxieties.
Doof
On Wednesday evening from 6-9pm the hall was transformed into a disco dancefloor. Around 170 students hit the dance floor and grooved to College bands and DJ Matt O’Brien. It was a fun night and I thank the Year 11 Hospitality students who assisted in the cooking and delivery of Pulled Pork rolls for dinner.
CARROLL DAY
On Friday 12 May, we celebrated Carroll Day at the college. The day began with letter writing that each student completes and puts into a time capsule which is opened in Year 12. We moved into the hall for a service presented by the Year 10 Youth Ministry class on the theme ‘Disney’ focusing on ‘Like so many things, it is not what’s outside, but what is inside that counts’ (Aladdin). Students watched inspirational clips and responded to the service in a liturgical environment.
The fun ramped up when all students participated in the Carroll Day Carnival on the oval ran and led by our Year 11 cohort. The activities ranged from Nerf gun wars to tug-a-war competitions and dunk tanks to biscuit making and karaoke. Finally, we finished in the hall by listening to the amazing Battle of the Bands – a truly entertaining experience! It was great to have Year 6 students join us from St Mary's and St Bernard's primary schools.

Timber Industry Excursion - YR 10, 11 and 12 Industrial Technology Timber
Welcome to the world of timber fine furniture, craft and timber recycling! Timber is one of the most versatile materials used in a wide range of industries, from construction to furniture making. Our Industrial Technology Timber students, from 10 – 12 visited Bungendore Woodworks Gallery, Dunstone Design in Queanbeyan and Thor’s Hammer in Griffith, ACT.
First stop; Bungendore Woodworks Gallery exhibits and sells on commission, a variety of beautifully crafted fine furniture and wooden art from a wide range of timber and exotic species. I’m sure that some of these pieces will inspire the designs of future projects.
Next stop was Dunstone Design. Evan Dunstone started as an apprentice at Bungendore and is now one of the very few businesses that rely solely on producing fine furniture. When we arrived, we were welcomed by the smell of freshly cut timber and the sound of buzzing machinery. As Evan’s crew carried on working, he showed the students some amazing pieces of work and explained in detail the design elements and craftsmanship that go into each design. When it was time for the workers to have lunch, Evan showed us through the factory and explained how each piece of machinery was selected for maximum efficiency and safety.
We then travelled on to Thor’s Hammer, a timber recycling warehouse that processes reclaimed timber and offers fine furniture, machining services and raw timber sales. Our host, David, showed us through the storage warehouse, the processing facility and the gallery. David explained how each piece of furniture tells a story through its past life through features such as bolt and nail holes. These are filled with black resin to emphasize these features. We also saw how the plant had implemented a closed-loop system, where the waste generated from the production was turned into briquettes to fuel fires over winter.
In conclusion, our visit to the three locations described was an eye-opening experience. We learned about the importance of sustainable timber management, the craftsmanship that goes into creating beautiful furniture, and the potential for repurposing timber waste. We left with a newfound appreciation for the versatility and beauty of timber and a commitment to supporting sustainable practices in making timber products at Carroll College.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory - Meet the Cast
Meet the Cast
What has been your favourite part about playing Mrs Gloop, Augustus Gloop, Violet Beauregarde and Mr Beauregarde and being involved in the school musical so far?
Kiana:
My favourite part about playing Mrs Gloop is that it's something new, not the type of character I would have seen myself playing a few months ago but I have enjoyed trying something new and her character is just so fun and bubbly! I think the best part about her is I don't have to stop smiling and showing that I'm having fun and she is just overall a very great character to be able to play. I love the environment of the musical, the cast, the teachers, the band. It's so much fun to be involved in and it's such a great feeling to see it all come together.
Szaffi:
My favourite part about being in the school musical is that when we rehearse it we feel like a family and it's really nice having that experience at school as well as making new friends you didn’t really know much about before the play. I also find it a really great experience to have at my age so that it can help me more in the future with making friends and confidence on stage and in general. My favourite part about playing Augustus Gloop is that it helps me see that I don't need to look a certain way to enjoy life and food.
Lilly:
My favourite part about being in the musical is being able to talk to people I wouldn't normally talk to. Violet is not like me in person so it's fun acting confident and sassy.
Amelia:
My favourite part about playing Mr Beauregard is working with the cast, everyone is really nice and fun to rehearse with. I also love Lilly’s character and my character as we are complete opposites in most ways.
What can you tell us about Mrs Gloop, Augustus Gloop, Violet Beauregarde and Mr Beauregarde?
Kiana:
Mrs Gloop is a very lovely, exciting and fun character to play and I think to watch as well. She is a very likeable character and is very nice to anyone she meets. Her world revolves around her son and she said herself, in one of the lines, that she does love her son more than her husband. She spoils her son with food mostly but overall I would say she is one of the most likeable characters out of the golden ticket winners and their parents.
Szaffi:
Augustus is a very brave and hungry person and even though he may have lots of money it doesn’t change where he eats or what he eats. At the start of the movie version, Augustus is interviewed in a small restaurant, in his hometown, where he knows everyone, which I find very sweet. I also really love the bond he and his mother have and that they show so much love for each other and enjoy each other’s company so much. I hope Kiana and I can recreate that, as well as possible, on stage.
Lilly:
Violet is a little girl that is a champion gum chewer, and she's popular on social media. Her personality is very outgoing and sassy.
Amelia:
Violet is famous for chewing bubblegum and Mr Beauregarde is her manager, always trying to seize opportunities and is there for everything she needs.

Junior Girls Report
The Junior girls excelled at the soccer day in Canberra on Tuesday. The team gained valuable experience and displayed fantastic sportsmanship and teamwork throughout the day. Led by Annelise and her amazing acrobatic throw-in display, the team won all their games and drew with a strong Lumen team that had beaten them last year. The Year 7 girls that have joined the team this year (Tahlae, Elyssa, and Madison ) have a bright future ahead of them as they were a critical presence in the midfield. Congratulations to all the girls on the day!

Junior Boys Report
The Year 7-10 Boys Football team played three outstanding games in Canberra this week. The boys first played two-round games in Pool C. Our first game was against St Pats Catholic College on an early and cool morning in Canberra. The boys connected well and found the back of the opponent's net six times. Our second game was well fought; however, our opponent Lumen Christi played well and got the upper hand this time against our developing superstars. The junior boys qualified for the semifinal and went down to a very strong Lumen Christi team, unfortunately.
I would like to congratulate all the boys for all their effort on and off the field. This team is preparing well for the upcoming Bill Turner Cup games and future endeavours on the soccer field. Well done for your amazing, good sport and team spirit.
Team: Ashton Gill, Archer Schuchmann, Nick Wain, Cameron Paull, Lukas Coulter, Harry Bruce, Sam Harris, Alex McDougall, Austin Enright, Floyd Prior, Murray Harrington, Akin Suksing, Brodee Hart, Dylan Cooper and Blade Hall.

Open Boys Report
Victory at the Archdiocese of Canberra Soccer Gala Day for the Open Boys Team!
In a stunning display of skill, determination, and teamwork, our Open Boys Soccer Team emerged as champions in the highly anticipated round-robin tournament held on Tuesday in sunny Canberra. Our boys showed exceptional prowess on the field and reclaimed the championship shield for our beloved College.
The first game against Hennessy Catholic College set the tone for our team's extraordinary performance, as they dominated with an outstanding 6-0 victory. Our players showcased their unrivalled attacking abilities, netting goal after goal. A spectacular volley by Tyler Cooper inspired the team for what was to come.
Luck was on our side as our team was granted a bye for the next round. While they did not face an opponent on the field, they used the opportunity to rest, regroup, and fine-tune their strategies for the upcoming challenge. The boys understood the significance of this momentary pause and knew they needed to maintain their focus for the final game.
In the highly anticipated final, our Senior School Boys' Soccer Team faced Lumen Christi Catholic College, but their spirit and unwavering dedication propelled them to a resounding victory. With a commendable scoreline of 5-1, our boys demonstrated their ability to adapt to different game scenarios and maintain their composure under pressure.
Notably, our team's mid-field shone brightly throughout the tournament, with numerous outstanding set plays and exceptional ability to cover ground when needed. Well done to Josh Smart who was Captain for the day and to Hugh Wignell for most valuable player.
This victory holds a special significance as it marks the first time our College has won the championship shield since its inaugural year back in 2014. Our Open Boys Soccer Team has bought the shield back to Carroll College.
Team: Max Colbourne, Tyler Cooper, Declan Foran, Charlie Samsa, Callum Coulter, Seth Middleton, Michael Aitken, Oscar Bruce, Bluey Spies, Nate Pike, Hugh Wignell, Ryan Johnston, Jack Hewison, Will Dallas and Josh Smart.
Mr Jason Szkwarek
Open Boys Football Coach

Handy Hints
When finalising payments on Qkr, please make sure to finalise anything that is in the cart on the top right-hand corner. If the cart is not empty and you do not have a receipt, this means the payment and consent has not been finalised. This includes any events or excursions that only require permission (eg. swimming consent notes). Once you have signed the permission note you will still need to ‘checkout’ at the end of the process to ensure the permission note is finalised. Thank you!
Qkr! is our preferred payment option. If you need help using this app, please contact the Office on 44 715600.
